Peter Angelos: Birth, Personal Life, Family, and Career

Angelos was the majority owner of the Baltimore Orioles. Which is a team in the American League Baseball, from 1993 until Peter Angelos’s death. He died at the age of 94 in Towson, Maryland, U.S.

Peter Angelos Young and Education

Peter Angelos was born on July 4th, 1929 in Pittsburgh. Peter’s full name was Peter George Angelos. He was the son of  John and Frances Angelos. Who were the Menetes of Greece and shifted to the United States. After his birth, his first name was changed to Peter.  Angelos’s family settled in the working-class neighborhood of Highlandtown. They lived in a row house. Her father spoke Greek at home most of the time.

Angelos graduated from Patterson Park High School. After that, he joined the University of Baltimore. From the University of Baltimore, he earned a bachelor’s degree. After getting a bachelor’s degree he attended law school at the University of Baltimore School of Law.  He took his classes at night while he worked in his family’s tavern. In 1960, he graduated from law school and was named class valedictorian.

Peter Angelos’s Career

Angelos passed in 1961 and opened an office. Specializing in handling product-liability cases for employees. Angelos has been estimated at $330 million from that litigation. He served on the Baltimore City Council from 1959 to 1963. He also ran for Mayor of the city’s first interracial in 1967, but he lost that.

In March 1996, Maryland hired Angelos to represent the state in its suit against tobacco companies. They offered him a 25% contingency fee. After filing suit on behalf of the state the trial court ruled that the state’s recovery would be limited. The Maryland State Legislature cut Angelos’s fee to 12.6%. After that, he settled for $150 million paid over five years.

Peter Angelos in Politics

Angelos began his political career with an unsuccessful run for Maryland Senate in 1958. From 1959 to 1963 he hold on the seat of Baltimore City Council. He was the first Greek-American, who was elected to the council. Angelos was known for demanding governmental oversight and fiscal responsibilities. Some people called him for investigations into city agencies. In 1963, he ran for city council president but lost to Thomas D’Alesandro.

Angelos also ran for the Democratic nomination in 1967. Angelos also donated $272,000 to the expenditure-only committee which sought to influence Vice President Joe Biden.

Peter Angelos’s Baltimore Orioles

In 1993, Angelos assembled a group of investors from New York venture capitalist Eli Jacobs to purchase the Baltimore Orioles of Major League Baseball (MBL). Angelos was the main investor, who contributed $40 million On 4th October 1993 Jacobs sold the Orioles to Angelos’s group for $173 million. It was the highest price that was paid for a sports franchise at that time.

Peter Angelos became its owner and was ready to pay high salaries to talented free agents. In 1994, under Angelos’s direction, the Orioles signed four high-price agents: Rafael Palmeiro, Sid Fernandez, Chris Sabo, and Lee Smith.

During the 1994-95 MLB strike when the other owners signed a document canceling the rest of the 1994 MLB season at that time, Angleos refused to sign it because it blamed the players for the impasse. In early 1995, Peter Angelos announced his decision to replace players. And also welcome as a champion of the worker.

In 1999, Angelos arranged a two-game exhibition series to be played. The teams were the Orioles and the Cuban national baseball team. The first game was played in Havana and the Orioles won in that game, while the Cuban team won the second game held at Oriole Park at Camden Yards. Angelos became a controversial figure, after becoming the owner of Orioles.

Asc Angelos’ health began to fail, his sons Louis and John took the leadership of Orioles. Angelos started to focus on his health. In February 2019, MBL instructed the Orioles, that they had to inform MBL about who was controlling the team until June. In November 2020, the team approved John P. Angelos, Vice President of the Orioles, he was the son of Peter Angelos.

On January 30th, 2024, Angeols agreed to sell the team for $1.725 billion. If approved by the owners of the Orioles, the group would require 40% of the team and the remainder they would get after Angelos’s death. Angelos died on 23rd March 2024, three days before the sale of the team. Which had been expected to be finalized.

Peter Angelos’s Personal Life

Peter Angelos married Georgia Kousouris in 1996. They had two children named John and Louis Angelos. John had served as vice president of the Orioles since 1999 in Baltimore.

At the age of 94 Angelos died on 23rd March 2024 at the Greater Baltimore Medical Center.

Peter Angelos Awards

In 1998, Angelos was named “Maryland of the Year” by The Baltimore Sun. Angelos also received the Golden Plate Award from the American Academy of Achievement in 1995. In 1996 Angelos was awarded the Ellis Island Medal of Honor. In 2016, Angelos was inducted Civic Hall of Fame for his lifetime of philanthropy.
